WHY DO I LOVE THE SHOW SEX AND THE CITY?

My sister doesn't understand it.  She says, "You're married and live in the suburbs!  Why would you like that show?"

Uh...many reasons!  Because of the great character development!

Because of the terrific acting!

Because of the wonderful writing, the NEVER BORING plots that involve human nature and raw emotion....the plots that just about ANYONE can relate to who has ever DATED AND BEEN SINGLE, whether they live in the city or not!

But mostly I love the show, because it always makes me laugh.  Especially Samantha, the over sexed one (in case anyone out there is living under a rock and doesn't know who Samantha is)!

IT'S NOT JUST FOR THE SEX!

My husband claims, "You just watch it for the sex."

Oh, brother!  Trust me, if I wanted to watch something "just for the sex" there are a lot more sex filled choices I could make!  Actually, I watch it because of the RELATIONSHIPS.

Yes, relationships.  That's what this now retired HBO series is all about.

The series has been trashed, spoofed numerous times on YouTube....it's been put down, called "unrealistic" (okay, so how did Carrie afford that great apartment in Manhattan and all those expensive designer shoes?) but no matter.  It's just ENTERTAINMENT people...and that's exactly what the show provides.

Sex and the City is such a quality show, that I can watch episodes over and over again, and still find them funny; still feel the emotion.  Now THAT'S the sign of good writing - and acting.

Here we have four friends....four WOMEN no less, who stand by each other throughout the years...throughout all their messy break-ups and freak outs and bad hair styles....and that's something!  I, for one, think that's pretty darn nice.   Unrealistic, you argue?  So what.  It's still pretty darn nice!

I even stand by the Sex and the City movies...yes I do!  At first, I was a little skeptical.  Wait a minute! I said to myself.  This isn't exactly like the show.

Well of course not.  Why should it be?  However, the movies did retain a lot of the same "flavor" and sarcastic humor that made the show popular.

The first movie is also quite emotional.  The second movie is...okay...a tad bit unrealistic...that vacation in the middle East would probably have run millions of dollars...and that's just their clothing budget ALONE....and a bit cheesy in parts.....and YES, yes, yes, like everyone kept pointing out in a snide way,Wow.  They've gotten so OLD...but so what?

So they have evolved...they're not the same women they were when the show first started way back in the 90's.  Who is?  I think that just makes it more interesting.  Big is older....more mature....(in case ANYONE out there is STILL living under a rock and doesn't know, Big was Carrie's (Sara Jessica Parker's) love interest throughout the series - and then, FINALLY, her husband).

But I like that - that whole "evolution" thing.  Keeps it from getting stagnant.

Besides, Big is still hot!

Of course I do agree you had to be a hard core fan to appreciate the movies.  But all of us fans want more!  Let's see the four women turn into senior citizens complaining about dentures and hip replacement therapy.  I'll still be there watching....and laughing.

I fear that TV is NOT churning out any more quality shows like Sex and the City of late.  The TV is so jammed with reality junk, or new series where all of the characters all sort of seem the same...to the point where you don't even really like anyone, or care about any of the characters, and you can't relate to anyone, and nothing's even very funny.

I'm just glad Sex and the City was made, and can be viewed via repeats and DVDs....and who knows.  Maybe one day they'll make another movie....maybe Carrie will decide to have a baby after all (via surragate?  There's some interesting plot fodder) and then she'll have to deal with being an "older mom"

.......and maybe Charlotte's husband WILL be tempted by the nanny...and Miranda will take a lover, and wonder of wonders...Samantha will actually get married.......
